Who should have supplementary health insurance?
Provincial health care plans may not satisfy all your medical care needs. If you would like extra coverage you can apply for supplementary health and dental insurance. While supplementary plans vary from province to province, as well as the type and level of insurance coverage offered, the most common types of supplemental health insurance is extended health (which provides coverage for prescriptions, vision etc.) and dental plans.
You need extended health and dental coverage if you are:
•Self-employed
If you have your own business you may want to consider to have a group plan set up. Also you can apply for personal extended health and dental plan to get comprehensive coverage. Remember that insurance premiums are tax deductible!
•Retiree
Since the employee benefits plan you’re accustomed to at your work may not cover you during retirement be prepared with supplementary health insurance.
•You need extra coverage
Extra coverage is a good idea if you have additional health care needs that are not covered under provincial or your group or work plan.

Vision Care
Covers the costs to purchase prescription lenses and frames and/or contact lenses up to $100 per 2 years, plus $50 for Optometrist visits. Vision Care also provides PVS Discounts up to 20% at participating retailers.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment
Covers a loss directly resulting from accidental bodily injury, including loss of life, where the loss occurs within a year of the date of the accident, up to a maximum of $10,000 per adult or $4,000 per child or senior over 65.
Survivor Benefit
Provides survivor benefit for continuous coverage for 1 year following the death of the subscriber or co-subscriber. This benefit is available 1 year after the policy effective date.
Registered Specialists and Therapists
Covers visits to Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths, Podiatrists, Naturopaths, Chiropodists, Registered Massage Therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Social Workers and Speech Therapists, up to the maximums stated below.
Registered Specialists and Therapists: Maximum of $300 per specialist/therapist, $20 per visit. Maximum of $35 per year for chiropractic x-rays.
Psychologists and Social Workers: Maximum of $80 for first visit, $65 for each subsequent visit. Maximum 10 visits per year.
Speech Therapists: Maximum of $65 for first visit, $45 for each subsequent visit. Maximum 10 visits per year.
Lifeline Response Service
Provides 24-hour monitoring service for people coping with medical problems at home, up to a maximum of 3 months per lifetime.
Home Care, Nursing, Prosthetics and Medical Equipment
Covers the services of registered health professionals including Registered Nurses, Registered Nursing Assistants and healthcare aid; includes surgical bandages and dressings and the purchase or rental of medically necessary equipment such as crutches, non-electric wheel-chairs and hospital beds, oxygen and other equipment recommended by your physician and approved by Manulife Financial. Also includes prosthetic appliances such as artificial limbs, eyes, splints, casts and breast prostheses following mastectomies. Payment will be coordinated where benefits are available through the Assistive Devices Program. Custom orthotics are covered for up to $225 per year. Other services and devices listed above are covered up to maximums of: Year 1: $1,000; Year 2: $1,300; Year 3: $1,500; Year 4: $2,000; Year 5: $2,500.
Hearing Aids
Purchase and repair costs for hearing aids are covered for up to $300 per 4 year period. A 10% deduction of costs for hearing aids is also available under PVS.
Ambulance Services
Covers trips to hospitals in a licensed ground ambulance. Charges are covered up to the amount between what the provincial health plan covers and what is reasonable and customary. Air ambulance is payable only after provincial health insurance plan maximum has been reached, if applicable, up to a $4,000 maximum.

Covers dental treatment required as a result of an accidental blow to the head or mouth up to a maximum of $2,000 per year. Treatment must be sought within the 90-day period following the accident.
Health Service Navigator
Provides access for the applicant and their eligible family members to the Health Service Navigator phone hotline, which provides information about the Canadian health care system and can answer health-related questions and provide a second opinion from a world-class hospital.
Lifetime Maximum
The lifetime maximum for all Manulife Dental-Only plans is $100,000.
