An Effective Date is the start date your insurance coverage begins. Therefore, all date changes must be made before your policy is in effect.
1) If you apply for GMS medical insurance coverage within 30 days of your arrival in Canada, there is a 2 day (48 hours) waiting period following the Effective Date.
Unless:
– a) An emergency is a result of a physical injury.
– b) You have an active insurance plan with similar coverage issued by a licensed Canadian insurance provider.
2) If you apply for GMS coverage having been in Canada for more than 30 days, the waiting period is 7 days (168 hours) for all emergencies from the Effective Date.
Unless:
– a) An emergency is a result of a physical injury.
– b) You have an existing plan with GMS or other insurance provider licensed to operate in Canada.
Important Notice: Expenses related to any sickness that manifests itself during the waiting period are not covered under this insurance plan, even if the costs are incurred after the waiting period has ended.
In order to be eligible for the Side-trips Benefit:
a) Your trip has to start and end in Canada.
b) You MUST physically remain in Canada for more than 50% of your coverage period with GMS insurance.
c) Coverage includes the Side-Trips to other countries that are up to 30 consecutive days in duration.
d) The trip is NOT to your country of origin / permanent residence.
Trip-break Exclusion: You are allowed to visit your home country with an intention to return to Canada during the period of insurance coverage without having to cancel your policy. However, the costs incurred for any medical services in your country of origin are not covered by the Destination Canada.

– You are NOT eligible for and/or covered by any Provincial Healthcare Plan in Canada.
– You DO NOT have a reason to seek medical attention when you apply for coverage.
– You are NOT applying for coverage from within Canada and had a medical treatment in excess of $5,000 during the last 12 months prior to applying for GMS insurance.
– You have NOT been refused an insurance coverage from a similar insurance provider to GMS.
If you are 55 years old or older, you must meet other conditions outlined below:
You must meet certain conditions that set out in Eligibility section in order to be eligible for an insurance policy offered by GMS.
If you are fifty-five (55) years of age and older you are NOT eligible if you:
1. are eighty 80 y.o. or older on the policy effective date;
2. have any reason to seek medical treatment, excluding the regular care of a chronic condition or medical evaluation required to satisfy travel visa requirements;
3. are currently in Canada, and have ever been denied similar coverage offered by another Canadian insurer;
4. are currently in Canada, and had more than $5,000 in medical treatment in the last year while in Canada;
5. are expecting medical treatment for heart disease;
6. are waiting for test(s) for a suspected heart condition;
7. are taking prescription drugs for heart disease while taking insulin to treat diabetes;
8. have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD);
9. fainted or fell more than once without medical diagnosis (syncope);
10. use home oxygen for a medical condition;
11. take oral steroids to treat a lung condition;
12. are being treated for cancer or have Metastatic Cancer;
13. have a vascular aneurysm that is surgically untreated;
14. have ever had: a) a valve replacement; b) kidney (renal) dialysis; c) an organ transplant;
15. were diagnosed; received new medical treatment (e.g. consultation, tests or prescription drugs); or had a change in your medical treatment (e.g. a stop, start or dosage change to a prescription drug, other than a dosage change of Coumadin or Warfarin) for, any of the following conditions in the last twelve (12)months:
a) congestive heart failure;
b) atrial flutter;
c) atrial / ventricular fibrillation;
d) peripheral vascular disease;
e) stroke / transient ischemic attack (TIA);
f) acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS);
g) terminal illness;
h) blood clots; or
i) gastrointestinal bleeding; and
16. require assistance from another person(s) with activities of daily living (ADL) if you are seventy (70) years of age or older.
If any of the medical conditions listed above apply to you, contact please contact us immediately since you will not be eligible for GMS’s policy.
Your medical coverage is a subject to various exclusions and limitations, which are outlined in the Exclusions section of the GMS | Policy Wording.
1) You cancel your policy within the first 10 days from the date of purchase prior to the Effective Date of your insurance policy.
2) Your travel visa application has been refused (including Super Visa). A satisfactory proof of Visa Refusal is required.
– A) Before the effective date set on your GMS medical insurance policy. No fee.
– B) Past the effective date, if GMS is notified once the policy start date has commenced. There will be an administration fee of $40.
– a) You send a request for a Partial Refund after your policy becomes effective in case no travel to Canada has taken place. The refund will be calculated from the date that GMS was notified.
– b) Early Departure – return to your country of origin before the expiry date on your GMS insurance policy. Such refund will be calculated starting from the date you left Canada.
– c) You become eligible for a Provincial Healthcare Plan, while your GMS insurance policy is still in effect. The refund will be calculated starting from the day GMS was notified and not the effective date of your provincial insurance plan.
– d) Death occurs while the insurance coverage is ongoing. The refund will be calculated from the date of death.

In order to proceed with a claim, after you have notified GMS of a medical emergency, you need to do the following:
– Fill out a Claim Form, medical records including a complete diagnosis from the attending physician and attach all original medical receipts for treatment and prescription medication.
– Send the form with your receipts to the address provided by GMS Emergency Assistant at the time of your call.
Limitation Period:
a) A written notice of claim must be sent to GMS within 30 days after contacting the provider.
b) A Proof of a Claim must be sent to GMS as soon as possible and no later than 90 days after the sickness or injury has occurred.
c) Any eligible expenses have to be submitted to GMS within 12 months from the date of the last eligible expense.
– Choose Effective Date – The start date of your insurance coverage.
– Set Expiry Date – The end date of your coverage period.
– Select Deductible – Part of covered expenses payable out-of-pocket.
– Select Coverage Amount – Total limit you are insured for.
