Last updated on February 4th, 2020

Winter is coming and so is the season for Snowbirds to take flight to the warm south. Black Friday and other attractive deals draw millions of Canadians down to the United States for bargain hunting.

It’s important to note that your Government Health Insurance Plan doesn’t cover much, if you get injured or sick away from home. Neither are you covered, if you miss your flight, or if your trip got cancelled. Carefully examine your coverage options, whether it’s a credit card insurance protection or a travel coverage policy from the Canadian Insurance company.

Manulife is one of the biggest insurance companies in Canada and they are well known for their travel insurance products. When your health and finances are at stake it’s important to go with an established and trusted company.

Manulife travel medical insurance covers up to $5 million per person. Your finances will be safeguarded in the event of an unexpected medical emergency during your trip. To increase your financial protection, coverage is also available for non-medical expenses like trip cancellation/interruption and baggage loss.

This season Manulife decided to introduce a few changes that will benefit Canadian travelers:

– Increased vehicle return benefit, now up to $3,000 if you are unable to pick up your car due to sickness or injury.

– Now more travelers will become eligible for pre-existing condition coverage with age increase to 60 years.

– Improved coverage for family- better coverage with Manulife family plan.

– Hospital allowance benefit will reimburse you for telephone, parking and other out of pocket expenses.

– Pet –return- return of a domestic pet to the place of your primary residence.

It’s important to look at all the conditions and exclusions to make sure you are covered for all occasions. Older couples would definitely benefit from enlisting the help of the insurance agents and their family doctors while filling out the medical questionnaires.

1. Always carry your Manulife Travel Policy (which includes your Wallet Card) with you (you can print it out at the time of purchase)

2. Contact the Assistance Center before receiving treatment while on your trip. The insurance company will assist you with finding the best course of action as well as with finding the right medical practitioners.

3. Remember to read the policy, paying particular attention to “pre-existing condition,” and other exclusions that apply to your coverage.
